Originally intendedThu 6 Jun Keira Knightley and Dominic West have a riot in this gender-bending and surprisingly funny story of the author and the husband who tried to steal her glory — as well as her girlfriend. Nicole Kidman alters her appearance — and leaves her comfort zone — considerably for this gritty, twisty crime drama about an LA detective brutalised by an undercover mission.

Kidman brings something particularly disquieting to the role, turning into a bleached, gaunt mask with eye sockets raw and red, possibly from long-dried tears. Melissa McCarthy and Richard E Grant excel as a belligerent literary memorabilia forger and her waspish sidekick in this brilliant black comedy.

That has the clumsy absurdity of real life. A year-old Mexican woman is the startled star of this irresistible documentary about her relationship with three doting grandsons. It has the potency of a sympathetically fabricated kind of realist fiction, a guided-reality effect that is completely absorbing.

The coda leaves you with an irresistibly sweet sadness. The sequel to the wildly acclaimed first Lego film offers a sophisticated and nuanced adventure for the micro heroes. Charlotte Rampling brings an intelligent intensity to the role of a woman whose ageing husband has been jailed in this near-wordless drama. It is an expression that could too easily be mistaken for simple contempt or self-disgust.

It is an idea to which Farhadi has been drawn before: the unburied secret, the unhealed wound, the imminent return of the repressed. Maggie Gyllenhaal excels as a teacher and wannabe poet who exploits a child prodigy in this gripping psychological drama.

The sheer sustained intensity of the drama and performances carry it through. Previously filmed inthis remake of the creepy Stephen King novel with Jason Clarke and John Lithgow is an impressively nasty scare story. It conveys an oppressive state of wrongness: it is the non-cemetery where the dead refuse to accept their status. The final image is an exhilaratingly nauseous lurch. This is a long film, but there is something so horribly compelling about its unhurried slouch towards the precipice.

The climactic movie in the Avengers series is an irresistible blend of action and comedy, guaranteeing a sugar rush of delirious enjoyment. The end is here, at least for the cinematic year, which has gifted us with a bounty of audacious dramasdocumentariescomediesthrillers and action-adventures. Meanwhile, Jarmusch stages scenes of gruesomeness with a shrug-ish good humor that belies this simmering-with-anger critique of a world going, perhaps deservedly, to hell. The volatility of youth and the vitality of kinship with present and former relatives serve as sturdy thematic undercurrents for this low-key genre tale.

Indoctrinated from a young age by his surrogate-parent gang leaders Bill Camp and Vera FarmigaWidner preaches xenophobia and division until he meets single mother Julie Danielle Macdonald. Her love, and the promise of a healthier sort of family, compels him to reconsider his life choices.

A portrait of the arduousness of transformation and redemption, Skin shares direct, unsettling ties to our current geopolitical moment.

Eddie Murphy regains his superstar mojo in Dolemite is My Namea raucous biopic fashioned in an Ed Wood and The Disaster Artist mold from the writers of the former about Rudy Ray Moore, a clownish wannabe-entertainer who hit it big by playing the profanely rhyming, kung-fu-fighting, ladies-bedding Dolemite. Convinced the three chalk pieces she received from her teacher grant her magical wishes, Estrella tries to survive her harrowing new circumstances on the streets, which are further complicated by two adult thugs intent on reclaiming their stolen property from Shine.

It casts a spell through malevolent horror imagery as well as its moving portrait of kids banding together to form a makeshift clan — and, in the process, to courageously face a world intent on destroying them, physically and psychically, at every turn. Until, that is, it reveals itself to be about a crew of filmmakers making an undead horror movie. And then, it becomes a story about how those artists are in fact overrun by a real zombie threat.

Think of it as a ghoulish Day for Night. Invisible Life is comprised of well-worn elements: impulsive passions, unexpected out-of-wedlock pregnancies, disapproving fathers, controlling husbands, and dreams crushed under the weight of a society that expects women to conform or be cast out into the wild.

Good luck maintaining a dry eye through its wrenching present-day coda. In a refrigerator, a disembodied hand awakens, and embarks on a quest to reunite with its former owner, who we soon learn is Moroccan-born French teenager Naoufel voiced by Hakim Faris. The rapidly changing global manufacturing landscape is examined through the lens of an Ohio auto-glass plant founded by the Chinese and staffed with men and women from both countries in American Factory.

As mean, and quite a bit leaner, than its voracious animals, Crawl is an example of B-moviemaking done right. During an apocalyptic Florida hurricane, struggling but talented collegiate swimmer Haley Kaya Scodelario goes in search of her MIA father Dave Barry Pepperwhom she finds in the basement of their old home, wounded and trapped by a swarm of alligators.

Their confined setting is a veritable labyrinth that —as with CGI-ified imagery of storm-ravaged communities — director Alexandre Aja imbues with underlying allegorical heft. From start to finish, Crawl is the sort of edge-of-your-seat, cringing-with-delight thriller that Hollywood rarely makes these days.By Brian D. Renner Dec. This is also immediately visible via her interpretation of Katherine as a razor-sharp stiletto that has spent a lifetime practicing against a whetstone.
